Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Kennington
Gardeners Kennington is committed to providing professional gardening services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening, grounds maintenance and related activities across the areas we serve.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures for all gardening tasks, including lawn care, planting, pruning, hedge trimming, clearance work and the use of machinery and chemicals.
We are committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance and to complying with all relevant health and safety legislation and approved codes of practice applicable to our work.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Kennington has overall responsibility for ensuring this Health and Safety policy is implemented, monitored and reviewed regularly. This includes:
Ensuring that health and safety considerations are integrated into planning and decision making for all gardening projects.
Providing appropriate resources for training, equipment, maintenance and protective measures.
Carrying out and documenting risk assessments for tasks, sites and equipment used in the delivery of our gardening services.
Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, recording findings and putting in place corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Reviewing this policy periodically to ensure it remains suitable, sufficient and up to date with changes in legislation, guidance and our working practices.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and contractors working on behalf of Gardeners Kennington share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Every team member is expected to:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Follow all safety instructions, safe systems of work, training guidance and site rules provided by the company.
Use machinery, tools, vehicles, access equipment and personal protective equipment only for their intended purpose and in accordance with training.
Report any defects, hazards, unsafe conditions, accidents or near misses to management promptly so that appropriate action can be taken.
Cooperate fully with health and safety arrangements, including attending training and toolbox talks, and participating in incident investigations where required.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Gardeners Kennington conducts risk assessments for the main categories of work undertaken, with additional site-specific assessments where necessary. These assessments identify potential hazards such as manual handling, cuts and punctures, slips and trips, falls from height, noise, vibration, flying debris, exposure to chemicals, adverse weather and traffic risks.
Control measures may include, but are not limited to, using safer work methods, selecting appropriate tools and machinery, planning access and egress routes, segregating work areas, scheduling tasks to reduce exposure to extreme weather, and using suitable personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection where required.
Safe working procedures are communicated to all staff and are reviewed regularly to reflect any changes in equipment, work processes or legislation.
Use of Machinery, Tools and Vehicles
All machinery, power tools and vehicles used by Gardeners Kennington are selected, inspected and maintained to ensure they are safe and fit for purpose. Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate powered equipment such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and mechanical cultivators.
Pre-use checks are carried out on equipment before each shift to identify defects or damage. Any faulty equipment is taken out of service immediately and reported for repair or replacement. Guards, safety devices and emergency stop controls must never be removed or bypassed.
Vehicles used for transporting staff, tools and green waste are driven in accordance with road safety regulations and company rules. Loads are secured properly, and safe parking and access arrangements are followed at each work location.
Chemical and Hazardous Substance Safety
Where gardening work requires the use of chemicals, fertilisers, pesticides or other hazardous substances, Gardeners Kennington follows a cautious and controlled approach. Only approved products are used, and data sheets and relevant guidance are consulted as part of our risk assessment process.
Substances are stored, transported, mixed and applied in accordance with manufacturer instructions and regulatory requirements. Protective equipment appropriate to the product and task is provided and must be worn as instructed. We seek to minimise the environmental impact of any chemical use by employing alternative methods where reasonably practicable and by ensuring careful application to avoid contamination of watercourses, neighbouring properties and wildlife habitats.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners Kennington promotes safe manual handling techniques to reduce the risk of strains and musculoskeletal injuries. Staff are trained to assess loads, use correct posture and lifting methods, and utilise mechanical aids, wheelbarrows or team lifting wherever feasible.
Work tasks are planned to allow for adequate breaks, hydration and rotation of duties, particularly during periods of extreme heat or cold. Suitable clothing is encouraged to protect from weather conditions, sun exposure and insect bites, while still complying with any required protective equipment.
Site Safety and Public Protection
When working on client premises, gardens, communal grounds or public areas, Gardeners Kennington takes steps to minimise risks to clients, visitors and passers-by. This includes establishing safe work zones, using warning signs or barriers where appropriate, managing traffic movement, and keeping pathways as clear and tidy as reasonably possible during and after work.
Tools and materials are stored safely while on site, and all waste and debris are removed or made safe at the end of each task. Particular care is taken when using powered tools, cutting equipment and chemicals near property boundaries, pathways or shared spaces.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Gardeners Kennington provides induction and ongoing training to ensure that all employees understand their health and safety responsibilities and are competent to carry out their work safely. Training may cover topics such as equipment use, manual handling, working at height, chemical safety, first aid awareness and emergency procedures.
Health and safety information is communicated through briefings, updates and site-specific instructions. Employees are encouraged to raise any concerns or suggestions for improving safety. Constructive feedback is welcomed and considered as part of our continuous improvement process.
Emergency Preparedness and Incident Reporting
Appropriate arrangements are in place for responding to emergencies such as accidents, sudden illness, fire, chemical spills or severe weather. Staff are made aware of reporting procedures and the location of first aid supplies where applicable.
All accidents and significant near misses are recorded and reviewed so that underlying causes can be identified and corrective actions implemented. Lessons learned are shared within the team to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
Environmental and Community Considerations
Gardeners Kennington recognises that protecting health and safety goes hand in hand with caring for the environment and local communities. We aim to minimise disturbance such as noise, dust and disruption while carrying out gardening work and to respect property boundaries, local residents and public spaces.
We promote responsible disposal and recycling of green waste and other materials where suitable facilities are available, and we seek to use methods and products that support biodiversity and sustainable gardening wherever reasonably practicable.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment or relevant legislation. Updated versions are communicated to all employees and made available to clients upon request. Gardeners Kennington is committed to maintaining high standards of safety and to continually improving the way we manage the risks associated with our gardening services.
